Our Eyes Don't Tell Lies

There is an old saying that says that the eyes are a window to the soul, or something like that. There really is a lot of truth to that and more and more studies are showing just how much you can tell if someone is being dishonest with you or not, by their eyes. This isn't exactly a new concept, for people have believed that they can tell if they are being lied to just by looking into their eyes. Until recently, I always believed that it was as simple as checking to see if somebody is having a hard time looking you in the eye while talking to you. However, as studies are showing more and more it's actually much more complex than that. Not to say that by the end of this article, you will be something of a human lie detector test yourself. With that, I'll get started.

If you suspect that someone may be being dishonest with you, keep a good watch on not just their eyes, but specifically the direction in which the person is looking. Now, we all know that when asked a question, a person that is being truthful will generally look straight ahead into the eyes of the person they're talking to. however, even if someone's eyes are shifting, they could be telling the truth.

Just say you are to ask somebody, something like, “Did Sara seem happy when you saw her today?”, when telling the truth, that person will most likely look in an upwards Direction and to the right. You know they are being truthful because they are visually remembering (Vr) what Sarah looks like and if she looked happy when they saw her this afternoon. However, looking up and to the left, they are visually constructing (Vc) an image in their head of what Sarah may have looked like this afternoon and if she had looked happy.

When someone is asked about an auditory memory, for example, “Did you listen to the CD I gave you?”, by looking to the left they are constructing an auditory memory(Am) inside of their head, therefore being untruthful. While looking directly to the right, they are remembering an auditory memory (Ar) therefore being truthful. Finally, by looking down, a person is either remembering or constructing a Kinesthetic/Feeling of a smell, taste or touch. So, if you were to ask somebody for example do you remember the smell of the campfire? And their eyes look down and to the right, then they are likely recalling (R)the smell of the campfire, while looking down and to the left, they are constructing (Ai) what they think the campfire would have smelled like.

Unfortunately, there is never a full out way to tell if you are being lied to or not. There have been several credible studies that have proven this to be true, however there are also the critics who claim that it is nothing but a load of B.S.

In my own personal experiences, I have found this not to be one hundred percent accurate however it has proved to work most of the time.
